La única opción correcta es In the end we all ordered steak.

Las expresiones at the end, by the end e in the end son fuente interminable de dudas para los estudiantes de inglés. Esto es comprensible, pues los significados son parecidos y algunas veces casi se solapan. Vamos a examinarlos uno por uno.

The concert was outstanding, with 15 minutes applause at the end (después de que terminara).

The documentary was profoundly moving and by the end we were all in tears (empezamos a llorar antes de que llegara al final).

It was difficult to decide which book to buy, but in the end I opted for the latest Salman Rushdie (después de considerar todas las opciones).

A in the end nunca le sigue of + sustantivo y hace referencia al hecho de actuar después de considerar o discutir varias opciones.

Tanto at the end como by the end pueden usarse con «of + sustantivo» o por sí solas pero, en cualquiera de los casos, siempre hacen referencia a la parte final de algo. En el caso de at the end, puede tratarse de algo temporal o espacial, mientras que by the end se utiliza exclusivamente con sentido temporal, para indicar que cualquier momento entre ahora y el momento indicado es aceptable, pero no más tarde:

At the end of most fairytales, everyone lives happily ever after.

I’ll be leaving for Argentina at the end of the week.

Students must hand in all assignments by the end of the month.

La tan sobreutilizada expresión at the end of the day, por la que comentaristas deportivos y sabidillos de barra de bar muestran un aprecio incondicional, se utiliza con sentido conclusivo cuando se está a punto de dictaminar lo que considera que es el hecho más importante de una situación, y señala, por tanto, el fin de la discusión:

You can scream and shout all you want, but the referee awarded the penalty to Australia and at the end of the day it’s his decision.

End también se utiliza en una serie de expresiones muy útiles:

This meeting is now at an end (terminado).

The tropical storm raged for days on end until we thought we would go mad stuck indoors (sin parar).

We have to draw up the contract this week, and to this end we have arranged another meeting (con el fin de alcanzar ese objetivo).

La expresión coloquial end of se usa para decir con mucha firmeza que se ha tomado una decisión final respecto a algo y que no se está dispuesto a discutirlo más:

You’re not going out anywhere until you’ve finished all your homework – end of!
