Manger en toute conscience

Vous est-il déjà arrivé de terminer un repas en vous demandant qui avait bien pu finir votre assiette ? Voici une méditation qui va vous permettre d’être attentif à ce que vous mettez dans votre bouche. Vous allez savourer ce que vous mangez comme vous ne l’avez encore jamais fait et – en prime – faciliter votre digestion en réduisant le stress ou la tension que vous apportez vous-même à table. (Vous n’aurez probablement pas envie de manger tout le temps avec une telle attention, mais une petite dose de pleine conscience à chaque repas sera néanmoins bénéfique.)

  1. Avant de commencer à manger, prenez le temps d’apprécier votre nourriture.
    Vous avez peut-être envie, comme dans la tradition zen, de songer à la Terre, aux rayons du soleil qui ont donné la vie à cette nourriture, à l’effort de tous ceux qui ont contribué à l’apporter sur votre table. Vous pouvez aussi exprimer vos remerciements à Dieu ou à l’esprit – ou tout simplement vous asseoir en silence et éprouver de la gratitude pour ce que vous avez. Si vous mangez avec d’autres personnes, tenez-vous par exemple par la main, souriez-vous ou établissez une autre forme de contact.
  2. Portez votre attention sur votre main au moment où vous amenez le premier morceau de nourriture à la bouche.
    Vous pouvez, comme il est d’usage dans certaines traditions monastiques, manger plus lentement que la normale. Si cela ne vous convient pas, mangez à votre rythme habituel en étant aussi attentif que possible.
  3. Soyez pleinement conscient au moment où la première bouchée pénètre à l’intérieur de votre bouche et inonde vos papilles de sensations.
    Remarquez la tendance de l’esprit à juger la saveur : « c’est trop épicé ou trop salé » ou encore « ça ne ressemble pas à ce que j’attendais. » Notez toutes les émotions que cette bouchée peut susciter : déception, soulagement, irritation, joie. Observez d’éventuelles répercussions de plaisir ou de chaleur ou toute autre sensation physique. Bon appétit !
  4. Si vous parlez en mangeant, regardez les conséquences de la conversation sur votre état.
    Certains sujets vous stressent-ils ou rendent-ils votre digestion plus difficile ? La conversation vous empêche-t-elle d’apprécier ce que vous mangez ou bien parvenez-vous à conjuguer les deux ?
  5. Restez attentif à chaque bouchée pendant l’intégralité du repas.
    C’est probablement la partie de l’exercice la plus difficile car nous avons tendance à nous éloigner dès que nous avons identifié la saveur de notre repas. Pourtant, vous pouvez apprécier son goût nouveau à chaque bouchée. (En cas de distraction, arrêtez-vous et respirez quelques instants avant de reprendre le cours de votre repas.)
