Tout finit au commencement

L’un des grands mystères de la méditation est que vous finissez inévitablement là où vous avez commencé. Comme Simon dans l’encadré « À la découverte du trésor de votre propre demeure », au chapitre 1, vous découvrirez que le trésor a toujours été caché dans votre propre demeure et que le chemin que vous suivez ne fait que vous ramener en vous.

 

Pour rendre ce mystère plus accessible, les Tibétains différencient le terrain, le chemin et la réalisation. L’esprit confus, occupé et malade, disent-ils, possède en lui la paix, l’amour et la joie que nous recherchons, c’est-à-dire le terrain ou la base pour s’éveiller. Mais les nuages de la négativité (doute, jugement, peur, colère, attachement) obscurcissant ce terrain (qui représente l’être que vous êtes vraiment au fond de vous-même) sont devenus si denses et impénétrables qu’il vous faut partir sur le chemin de la méditation pour éclaircir les nuages et retrouver la vérité.

 

Lorsque vous parvenez à reconnaître votre être essentiel – au moment de la réalisation – vous comprenez qu’il a toujours été là, là où vous êtes déjà, plus proche de votre cœur, plus près de votre respiration. Cet être essentiel est identique à ce que les adeptes du zen appellent l’esprit neuf du débutant.

Voici les caractéristiques de l’esprit neuf du débutant :

  • Illustration Ouverture sur tout ce qui survient : accueillir l’expérience dans la méditation sans tenter de la modifier permet d’être sur la même ligne que l’être lui-même qui englobe tout – la lumière et l’obscurité, le bon et le mauvais, la vie et la mort – sans jugement ni aversion.
  • Illustration Un esprit libéré de toute aspiration : chaque moment est perçu par des yeux et des oreilles neuves. Au lieu de méditer dans un objectif précis, vous êtes assis, confiant que votre conscience ouverte et prête contient toutes les qualités comme l’amour, la paix, le bonheur, la compassion, la sagesse et la sérénité – que vous recherchez.
  • Illustration Un esprit spacieux et spontané : certains enseignants comparent l’esprit neuf du débutant au ciel – même si des nuages peuvent le traverser, son étendue infinie n’est jamais ni endommagée ni restreinte. Pour ce qui est de la spontanéité, Jésus la résuma lorsqu’il dit : « Quiconque n’accueille le royaume de Dieu en petit enfant n’y entrera pas. » Libéré de toute aspiration et attente, et ouvert à tout, vous répondez avec spontanéité à toutes les situations.
  • Illustration Une conscience originelle et primitive : un célèbre kôan zen (énigme formulée par un maître à l’attention d’un disciple) dit cela : « Quel était votre visage originel, avant la naissance de vos parents ? » Ce kôan renvoie à la qualité primitive et ineffable de l’esprit qui vient avant la personnalité et le corps physique. Peut-être faudrait-il appeler l’esprit neuf du débutant l’esprit sans commencement !
