Vers le haut ou vers le bas ?

Les professeurs spirituels et les défenseurs du développement personnel raffolent des métaphores d’amplitude. Pour certains, le méditant, tel un mineur, descend au fond de son expérience intérieure, atteint une vision profonde de lui, ressent ou découvre la profondeur des choses. Pour d’autres, il rencontre la conscience supérieure, transcende le terrestre ou possède un esprit comme le ciel. (Je me suis accommodé dans ce livre des deux en utilisant indifféremment les deux directions.)

 

Dans une certaine mesure, la différence réside dans les préférences de chaque auteur ou professeur. Mais elle reflète également l’attitude par rapport à l’expérience intérieure : si vous croyez que le puit de la source de l’être se trouve en vous, sous l’individu, vous serez plus enclin à parler de profondeur. Si, au contraire, vous pensez que cette expérience se trouve à des échelons supérieurs de votre être ou qu’elle descend comme la grâce ou l’esprit de là-haut, vous vous référerez à l’altitude.

 

À mon humble avis, si vous plongez suffisamment profond, vous vous retrouverez au sommet de la montagne et si vous grimpez assez haut, vous parviendrez au fond de la mer. En fin de compte, vous vous trouvez exactement au même endroit. Tout cela pour dire que l’être pur n’est nulle part – il est partout en chacun de nous, à tous moments.

IllustrationAtteindre cette source de l’être pur de quelque manière que ce soit est l’objectif de la méditation, que vous aspiriez à l’illumination ou simplement à diminuer votre stress quotidien, être plus performant ou mieux vivre. C’est là que va irrévocablement vous conduire la méditation. Au cours de vos méditations, vous croiserez des choses qui semblent constituer un obstacle entre vous et l’expérience de votre être, comme vous pourriez rencontrer des couches de sédiments, des algues, des poissons et des débris si vous deviez rejoindre le fond d’un lac. Ces couches ne posent problème qu’en cas de turbulence de l’eau intérieure, qui empêche alors toute vision claire. (Par turbulence, j’entends un esprit agité ou encombré ou encore un cœur inquiet et effrayé.) L’ordre plus ou moins exact dans lequel vous rencontrerez ces couches dans vos méditations est le suivant :

  • Illustration Le bavardage de l’esprit : la première chose que vous rencontrerez certainement lorsque vous prêterez attention à votre espace intérieur, c’est le bavardage incessant de votre esprit. Les bouddhistes comparent souvent l’esprit à un singe bruyant qui se balance indéfiniment d’une branche-pensée à une autre sans jamais s’arrêter. Bien souvent, vous serez tellement pris par ce bavardage que vous n’en aurez même plus conscience. Il apparaît sous diverses formes : évocation du passé, préparation du futur ou résolution d’un problème présent. Peu importe le sujet, votre esprit se parle sans discontinuer, en se racontant des histoires dont vous êtes le héros (ou la victime). Après plusieurs études, rares étaient ceux chez qui le dialogue intérieur était inexistant et remplacé seulement par des images ou des sentiments.
