« Mettre un serpent à l’intérieur d’une tige de bambou » ou l’art subtil de la position assise sans bouger

IllustrationEn parlant de rester assis sans bouger, l’un de mes maîtres de méditation, le maître zen Shunryu Suzuki, disait que le meilleur moyen de révéler à un serpent sa vraie nature était de le mettre dans une tige de bambou vide. Arrêtons-nous un instant pour essayer de comprendre cette étrange métaphore. Que voulait-il dire ?

 

Imaginons que vous soyez un serpent que l’on a placé à l’intérieur d’une tige de bambou. Quel effet cela vous fait-il ? À chaque fois que vous essayez de glisser (ce que font généralement les serpents), vous vous heurtez aux parois de votre étroite demeure. C’est là que vous vous rendez compte à quel point votre corps est glissant !

 

De la même façon, rester assis dans une position donnée, le corps immobile (ou presque), revient à se trouver dans une tige de bambou qui vous renvoie chaque impulsion et chaque mouvement d’inattention. Vous comprenez alors combien votre corps est agité – et votre esprit, à l’origine de votre agitation corporelle, hyperactif. « Il faudrait peut-être que je me gratte, que je réponde au téléphone ou que je fasse cette course. » À chaque projet ou intention correspond une impulsion qui traverse les muscles et la peau. À moins de rester immobile, cette activité passe totalement inaperçue.

 

Le plus drôle est que vous êtes très capable de rester assis dans la même position pendant des heures sans même vous en rendre compte si vous êtes absorbé par l’une de vos activités favorites (regarder un film, surfer sur Internet, ou tout autre passe-temps). Essayez de faire quelque chose que vous trouvez désagréable ou ennuyeux – par exemple une activité étrange et peu familière comme porter son attention sur soi-même, suivre son souffle ou observer ses sensations – et chaque minute vous paraît aussi longue qu’une heure entière, chaque douleur prend des proportions inquiétantes, chaque chose à faire devient une urgence absolue.

 

En agissant et réagissant constamment à des pensées ou des stimulations extérieures, vous ne parviendrez jamais à découvrir comment fonctionne votre esprit. En restant au contraire assis aussi immobile que le serpent à l’intérieur de la tige de bambou, un miroir vous montre à quel point votre esprit peut être glissant et insaisissable.

 

L’immobilité est aussi un atout indéniable lorsque vous travaillez votre concentration. Imaginez un chirurgien du cœur ou un pianiste incapables de maîtriser les mouvements de leur corps ! Sachez que moins vous serez perturbé par les stimulations extérieures, plus il vous sera facile de suivre votre respiration, répéter votre mantra ou effectuer toute autre méditation.
