La Bella Donna della mia Mente

My limbs are wasted with a flame,

My feet are sore with travelling,

For, calling on my Lady’s name,

My lips have now forgot to sing.

O Linnet in the wild-rose brake

Strain for my Love thy melody,

O Lark sing louder for love’s sake,

My gentle Lady passeth by.

She is too fair for any man

To see or hold his heart’s delight,

Fairer than Queen or Courtesan

Or moonlit water in the night.

Her hair is bound with myrtle leaves,

(Green leaves upon her golden hair!)

Green grasses through the yellow sheaves

Of autumn corn are not more fair.

Her little lips, more made to kiss

Than to cry bitterly for pain,

Are tremulous as brook-water is,

Or roses after evening rain.

Her neck is like white melilote

Flushing for pleasure of the sun,

The throbbing of the linnet’s throat

Is not so sweet to look upon.

As a pomegranate, cut in twain,

White-seeded, in her crimson mouth,

Her cheeks are as the fading stain

Where the peach reddens to the south.

O twining hands! O delicate

White body made for love and pain!

O House of love! O desolate

Pale flower beaten by the rain!

La Bella Donna della mia Mente

Ho il corpo divorato da una fiamma,

I piedi doloranti per il cammino,

Poiché invocando il nome di madonna

Le mie labbra non sanno più cantare.

O fanello nel roseto selvatico,

Intona al mio amore la tua melodia,

O allodola, canta più forte in nome dell’amore,

Passa madonna mia gentile.

Ella è troppo bella perché un mortale

La vegga o elegga a bene del suo cuore,

Più bella è di regina o cortigiana

O acqua notturna illuminata dalla luna.

Ha i capelli legati da foglie di mirto,

(Foglie verdi sui suoi capelli d’oro!)

Verdi erbe nei gialli covoni

Di grano autunnio non sono più belle.

La sua boccuccia, più fatta per baciare

Che per piangere amaramente di dolore,

È tremula come acqua di ruscello

O rose dopo pioggia serotina.

Ha il collo come bianco meliloto

Acceso dal piacere del sole,

Il pulsare della gola del fanello

Non è altrettanto dolce alla vista.

Come un melograno spaccato in due,

Dai bianchi semi, nella sua bocca vermiglia,

Le sue guance sono come la scoloritura

Dove la pesca arrossa al mezzodì.

O mani sinuose! O delicato

Bianco corpo fatto per amore e dolore!

O casa dell’amore! O desolato

Pallido fiore percosso dalla pioggia!
