Surfers Paradise & the Gold Coast
Why Go?
Boasting 52km of golden beaches, 300 sunny days and millions of visitors each year, the Gold Coast serves up a steamy cocktail of sun, surf, sand and activity. This is one of the best places to learn to surf in Australia, so grab a longboard while you're here. Behind Surfers Paradise's famous beach is a shimmering strip of high-rise apartments, restaurants, bars, clubs and theme parks, where the fun can suck you into a dizzying vortex and spit you back out, happy but exhausted. The hype settles as you head south: Broadbeach is sandy and chic; Burleigh Heads has seaside charms; and Coolangatta is known for its laid-back surfer vibe. Don't miss the Gold Coast's lush subtropical hinterland – including Lamington and Springbrook National Parks – whose delights include rainforest walks, spectacular waterfalls, sweeping views and private mountain retreats.
When to Go
ADec-Feb Sunshine, higher temperatures, and busy beaches.
AJun-Aug The Australian winter brings tourists from chillier climes chasing the sun.
ANov-Dec School-leavers (schoolies) swarm into Surfers Paradise to party. (You've been warned.)

2 Bushwalking through craggy gorges and rainforests in Lamington National Park.
3 Beating a retreat from the crowds to a looong stretch of golden sand on South Stradbroke Island.
4 Taking in the view at the aptly named Best of All Lookout in Springbrook National Park.
5 Testing your nerve (and your digestive system) on the roller coasters at the Gold Coast's theme parks.
6 Drinking, dancing and watching the sun come up over the beach at Surfers Paradise.

DON'T MISS
GOLD COAST THEME PARKS
The gravity-defying roller coasters and water slides at the Gold Coast's American-style parks offer some seriously dizzy action – keeping your lunch down is a constant battle. Discount tickets are sold in most of the tourist offices on the Gold Coast; the VIP Pass (per person $110) grants unlimited entry to Sea World, Movie World and Wet’n’Wild (all owned by Warner Brothers).
A couple of tips: the parks can get insanely crowded, so arrive early or face a long walk from the far side of the car park. Also note that the parks don't let you bring your own food and drinks.
DreamworldAMUSEMENT PARK
( GOOGLE MAP ; %07-5588 1111, 1800 073 300; www.dreamworld.com.au; Dreamworld Pkwy, Coomera; adult/child $95/75; h10am-5pm)
Touts itself as Australia's 'biggest' theme park. There are the 'Big 9 Thrill Rides', plus the Wiggles World and the DreamWorks experience, both for younger kids. Other attractions include Tiger Island, plus a range of interactive animal encounters. A one-day World Pass (adult/child online $95/85, gate $105/95) ensures entry to both Dreamworld and WhiteWater World.
Sea WorldAMUSEMENT PARK
( GOOGLE MAP )
Sea World continues to attract controversy for its marine shows, where dolphins and sea lions perform tricks for the crowd. While Sea World claims the animals lead a good life, welfare groups argue that keeping such sensitive sea mammals in captivity is harmful, and is especially exacerbated when mixed with human interaction. The park also displays penguins and polar bears, and has water slides and roller coasters.
Movie WorldAMUSEMENT PARK
( GOOGLE MAP ; %07-5573 3999, 13 33 86; www.movieworld.com.au; Pacific Hwy, Oxenford; adult/child $83/50; h9.30am-5pm)
Movie-themed shows, rides and attractions, including the Batwing Spaceshot, Justice League 3D Ride and Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster. Batman, Austin Powers, Porky Pig et al roam through the crowds.

( GOOGLE MAP ; %07-5556 1660, 13 33 86; www.wetnwild.com.au; Pacific Hwy, Oxenford; adult/child $63/48; h10am-5pm)
The ultimate water slide here is the Kamikaze, where you plunge down an 11m drop in a two-person tube at 50km/h. This vast water park also has pitch-black slides, white-water rapids and wave pools.
WhiteWater WorldAMUSEMENT PARK
( GOOGLE MAP ; %07-5588 1111, 1800 073 300; www.whitewaterworld.com.au; Dreamworld Pkwy, Coomera; adult/child $60/40; h10am-4pm Mon-Fri, to 5pm Sat & Sun)
This park features the Cave of Waves, Pipeline Plunge and more than 140 water activities and slides. A one-day World Pass (adult/child online $95/85, gate $105/95) ensures entry to both Dreamworld and WhiteWater World.
Surfers Paradise & Broadbeach
Pop 24,300
Some say the surfers prefer beaches elsewhere and that (except for the beautiful beach) paradise has been tragically lost, but there’s no denying that this wild and trashy party zone attracts a phenomenal number of visitors – 20,000 per day! Party people come here for a heady dose of clubs, bars, malls and maybe a bit of beach-time when the hangover kicks in. It’s a sexy place: lots of shirtless, tattooed backpackers and more cleavage than the Grand Canyon.
The decibel level tails off markedly directly south of Surfers Paradise in Broadbeach, which ups the area's chic element with good cafes, stylish shops and restaurants, and a gorgeous stretch of golden shore.

This backpackers occupies an old apartment block away from the centre, so, as the name suggests, there’s a chance you may get to sleep in. There are pizza and barbecue nights, a kitchen, and free pick-ups from the transit centre. An adjoining apartment block offers some great renovated private rooms, too.

Great value for money and directly opposite the beach, this friendly, smallish high-rise has well-kept, spacious apartments with one or two bedrooms: mod furnishings, nice art, superclean, and all facing the sea.
Hi-Ho Beach ApartmentsAPARTMENT
( GOOGLE MAP ; %07-5538 2777; www.hihobeach.com.au; 2 Queensland Ave, Broadbeach; 1-/2-bedroom apt from $100/130; paWs)
A top choice for location, close to the beach and cafes. You're not paying for glitzy lobbies here: it's standard, value-for-money, no-frills accommodation (a bit '90s decor-wise), but well managed, clean and quiet. Dig the Vegas-esque sign!
Surfers Beachside Holiday ApartmentsAPARTMENT
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %07-5570 3000; www.surfersbeachside.com.au; 10 Vista St, Surfers Paradise; 1-/2- bedroom apt, 3 nights $600/700)
Delightful management is a huge plus at this unpretentious, family-friendly spot. Each apartment is individually owned and therefore decorated, but interiors are to a clean and comfortable standard. Minimum three-night stay in high season, but speak to management if you want fewer sleeps.
QTHOTEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %07-5584 1200; www.qtgoldcoast.com.au; 7 Staghorn Ave, Surfers Paradise; r from $165)
This funky-cool-meets-retro-hip high-rise is as eclectic as a great aunt's yard sale: Acapulco chairs, retro bikes and uber-sized '80s-style lampshades in the foyer. The wow-inducing decor is meant to reflect Surfers Paradise-meets-Miami circa '50s and '60s, and the fun-in-the-sun theme succeeds. Room interiors are less nostalgic (though fabrics are quirky); rooms are light, comfortable and modern.
In keeping with the fun and casual vibe, each room provides (on loan) a couple of pairs of rubber thongs (err, that's flip flops in Oz-speak, folks) in a cotton bag.

This hip corner cafe is 100m from Mermaid Beach, a quick jaunt south of Broadbeach. The brainchild of four buddies whose focus is organic ingredients, it's a mod-industrial affair with chunky timber tables, super staff and adventurous mains. Vegans will be right at home here too, as will kids – there's a fenced play area.

This trendy spot hidden in an unexpected location – within an arcade – oozes cool. An antithesis to the bright Surfers sun, it's a dark locale, where American bourbon-style bar meets industrial funk. It delivers. Simple gourmet sandwiches and egg dishes are the choice to soak up boutique brews and cocktails, including espresso martinis.

In sophisticated PR-speak, 'you can eat your way around the globe at the funky 21st century-style QT extravaganza'. In crude terms, this means you can stuff yourself silly by selecting from various food stations – Spanish charcuterie, Italian pizzas, Asian woks and an Australian seafood bar. It's the ultimate see-food-and-eat-it experience, in fun, stylish surrounds.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
SOUTH STRADBROKE ISLAND
This narrow, 21km-long sand island is largely undeveloped – the perfect antidote to the chaotic Gold Coast strip. At the northern end, the narrow channel separating it from North Stradbroke Island is a top fishing spot; at the southern end, the Spit is only 200m away. South Stradbroke was actually attached to North Stradbroke until a huge storm in 1896 blasted through the isthmus joining them. There's the luxury Ramada Couran Cove Island Resort ( GOOGLE MAP ; %07-5597 9999; www.courancove.com.au; South Stradbroke Island; d/ste from $350/450; as) here, plus three camping grounds, lots of wallabies and plenty of bush, sand and sea. LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
LUKE EGAN: FORMER PRO SURFER
The Gold Coast is one of the top five surfing destinations in the world. The most unique thing about the Goldy is that the waves break mostly on sand, so for sandy bottoms we get some of the most perfect waves in the world.
Best Surf Beaches
The length of ride on the famous points of Burleigh Heads, Kirra Beach, Rainbow Bay and Snapper Rocks make the Goldy a must for every passionate surfer.
Where to Learn
The waves at Greenmount Point and Currumbin allow first-timers plenty of time to get to their feet and still enjoy a long ride. Learning to surf at these two places would be close to the best place to learn anywhere in Australia, and probably the world.
Best Experience
There isn’t a better feeling than being ‘surfed out’ – the feeling you have after a day of surfing. Even though I no longer compete on the world surfing tour I still surf every day like it’s my last.
Coolangatta
Pop 5200
A down-to-earth seaside town on Queensland’s southern border, Coolangatta has quality surf beaches (including the legendary 'Superbank' break) and a tight-knit community. The legendary Coolangatta Gold surf-lifesaving comp happens here every October. Follow the boardwalk north around Kirra Point to the suburb of Kirra itself, with a beautiful long stretch of beach and challenging surf.

WORTH A TRIP
LAMINGTON NATIONAL PARK
Australia’s largest remnant of subtropical rainforest cloaks the deep valleys and steep cliffs of the McPherson Range, reaching elevations of 1100m on the Lamington Plateau. Here, the 200-sq-km Lamington National Park ( GOOGLE MAP ; www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/lamington) is a Unesco World Heritage Site and has more than 160km of walking trails.
The two most accessible sections of the park are the Binna Burra and Green Mountains sections, both reached via long, narrow, winding roads from Canungra (not great for big campervans). Binna Burra can also be accessed from Nerang.
Activities
Bushwalks within the park include everything from short jaunts to multiday epics. For experienced hikers, the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk is a three-day trip along a 54km path from the Green Mountains section to the Springbrook Plateau. Other favourites include the excellent Tree Top Canopy Walk along a series of rope-and-plank suspension bridges at Green Mountains, and the 21km Border Track that follows the dividing range between New South Wales and Queensland and links Binna Burra to Green Mountains.
Walking guides are available from the Binna Burra and Green Mountains ranger stations (open 7.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.30pm Saturday and Sunday).

Tamborine Mountain
This squat, mountaintop rainforest community – comprising Eagle Heights, North Tamborine and Mt Tamborine – is 45km inland from the Gold Coast beaches, and has cornered the artsy-craftsy, Germanic-kitsch, package-tour, chocolate/fudge/liqueur market in a big way. If this is your bag, Gallery Walk in Eagle Heights is the place to stock up.
For a good choice of funky cafes and eateries, head to Main St, North Tamborine, a favourite among the locals. Or head further afield for some excellent wineries (with good restaurants and views).

Springbrook National Park
About a 40-minute drive west of Burleigh Heads, Springbrook National Park ( GOOGLE MAP ; www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/springbrook) is a steep remnant of the huge Tweed Shield volcano that centred on nearby Mt Warning in NSW more than 20 million years ago. It’s a wonderland for hikers, with excellent trails through cool-temperate, subtropical and eucalypt forests offering a mosaic of gorges, cliffs and waterfalls.
The park is divided into four sections. The 1000m-plus high Springbrook Plateau section houses the strung-out township of Springbrook along Springbrook Rd, and receives the most visitors: it's laced with waterfalls, trails and eye-popping lookouts. The scenic Natural Bridge section, off the Nerang–Murwillumbah road, has a 1km walking circuit leading to a huge rock arch spanning a water-formed cave – home to a luminous colony of glow-worms. The Mt Cougal section, accessed via Currumbin Creek Rd, has several waterfalls and swimming holes (watch out for submerged logs and slippery rocks); while the heavily forested Numinbah section to the north is the fourth section of the park.
