About the Author

Janet Gurtler's work has appeared in magazines such as Today's Parent and Luxury Living Lifestyles. She now spends her time reading and writing edgy, meaningful books for and about teens. In 2007, she finished her first triathlon. She lives beside the Rocky Mountains with her son and husband in Calgary, Canada.

Novela de una discreta belleza (tal vez demasiado discreta), Los restos del día (The remains of the day, 1989), del inglés nacido en Japón, Kazuo Ishiguro (1954), está centrada en la recreación de la compleja psicología y el lenguaje de su personaje central, Stevens, mayordomo de una mansión inglesa a lo largo de la primera mitad del siglo XX. El objetivo parece ser explicar las razones de un comportamiento ejemplar aun a costa de la felicidad propia, por un rigor que lo empuja a renunciar a la realidad.

En cambio, la historia es poca cosa: el nuevo dueño de la mansión, un norteamericano, le propone a Stevens que se tome unos días para conocer el país. A bordo del automóvil de su “señor”, el empleado viaja por la campiña y se dirige hasta una ciudad lejana, donde espera ver a miss Benton, otrora ama de llaves de la mansión, de quien está secretamente enamorado, algo que no es capaz de confesar ni siquiera en su yo interior: a lo largo de su camino, Stevens recuerda los años de esplendor de la casa, antes de que su amo (un filonazi que trató de cambiar el rumbo de la política exterior de su país durante la segunda guerra) cayera en la desgracia del escarnio público y el colaboracionismo. Pero en sus solitarias disquisiciones, nunca se atreve a aceptar lo innegable: que durante años rehuyó hablarle de amor a miss Benton, sólo que ahora es demasiado tarde; sin embargo, el personaje disfraza lo que es un viaje de amor de un fin práctico: supone (quiere suponer) que su vieja amiga tal vez se reintegre en el servicio.

Pasa algo parecido con los sentimientos de Stevens hacia su jefe: a pesar de que ya no está a su servicio y el patrón ha muerto, el mayordomo se niega a criticarlo con dureza, como hacen los demás; su fidelidad (o su ceguera, no lo sé) se mantiene más allá del tiempo, como si se tratara de una variante británica de Job; nada cambia lo anterior: ni el talante antidemocrático del magnate ni su ocasional antisemitismo; Stevens encuentra una justificación hasta para los actos más reprobables, aunque el humillado sea él mismo. Como estamos ante un hombre para el cual las formas lo son todo (nunca se permite un ex abrupto o la escandalosa certidumbre de que tiene sentimientos), hay un especial acento en la redacción de su lenguaje, que resulta ser inútil más allá de los límites de su oficio: es incapaz de hacer una broma o conversar sin recelo con la gente más humilde, de la misma forma que le resulta imposible hablar de sexualidad humana con un joven hombre a punto de casarse, a quien pretende aleccionar con ejemplos pueriles. El suyo es el lenguaje de los cubiertos de plata y las botellas de oporto, pero en su pobre vida interior todo es contención y prudencia. En cambio miss Benton es apasionada y, cuando no resiste más la frialdad a toda prueba de su jefe, puede llegar a expresarse con una rudeza que sólo el amor perdona.

Me gusta la técnica de esta novela de Ishiguro, su escritura cuidadosa y su dibujo elegante de un ser atormentado, que me parece logrado pero al mismo tiempo repulsivo: es como estar ante la encarnación de las oportunidades perdidas, porque el personaje recibe una oferta preciosa pero la deja pasar para recluirse en una penosa existencia marcada por el sino de una excesiva disciplina; sin embargo, como lo he dicho, se trata de una novela que apenas me ha conmovido.
