The Swiss writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–90) was one of the most important literary figures of the second half of the twentieth century. During the years of the cold war, arguably only Beckett, Camus, Sartre, and Brecht rivaled him as a presence in European letters. Yet outside Europe, this prolific author is primarily known for only one work, . With these long-awaited translations of his plays, fictions, and essays, Dürrenmatt becomes available again in all his brilliance to the English-speaking world.

This second volume of reveals a writer who may stand as Kafka’s greatest heir. Peter Matthiessen's lyrical and illuminating work in the Watson narrative has been praised highly by such contemporaries as Saul Bellow, William Styron, and W. S. Merwin. De moeder weigert elke zorg en dwingt zo haar dochter haar drie maal per dag te bellen, boodschappen te doen en het huis schoon te houden. Tijdens een kerstmaal in een bejaardencentrum loopt deze relatie uit op een anti-climax. De dochter dacht in het centrum een verzorgster te vinden en een nieuwe partner in een gescheiden man. Ze komt bedrogen uit. De moeder presteert het helemaal afhankelijk te worden en zo haar dochter nog meer te claimen. Ze zal in haar eentje de beproevingen moeten doorstaan zonder iets prettigs in het vooruitzicht. De auteur heeft de navrante problematiek in een plezierige setting gegoten, vooral de beschrijvingen van de typetjes in het bejaardencentrum zijn zeer sappig. De moeder-dochterproblematiek is voor een groot publiek herkenbaar beschreven, ook voor mannen.

Zuid-Frankrijk, augustus 1963. De tienjarige Christian Rosselot wordt ontvoerd en verkracht. Meer dood dan levend laat de dader hem achter in een korenveld. Niet lang daarna sterft het kind.

De lokale gendarme arresteert de plaatselijke dronkelap, ondanks het feit dat de bewijsvoering tegen hem niet sterk is. Een tweede verdachte gaat vrijuit omdat hij bescherming geniet in hoge politieke kringen. De enige die tegen deze vorm van klassenjustitie bezwaar aantekent, is de jonge inspecteur Dominic Fornier, maar na de nodige druk van hogerhand laat hij zijn protest varen...

Een elfjarig Engels jongetje, wiens ouders in Californië bij een auto-ongeluk om het leven zijn gekomen, maar die zelf het ongeval overleeft, gaat bij zijn oom in Engeland wonen. Vanwege zijn psychische problemen - angstdromen en de ontwikkeling van een tweede persoonlijkheid - wordt de hulp van een psychiater ingeroepen, die bij de jongen via hypnotische regressie beelden oproept van een 30 jaar geleden plaatsgevonden gruwelijke gebeurtenis, waarvan de ware toedracht nu achterhaald kan worden. Een beklemmende en fascinerende psychologische thriller. Het verhaal wint nog eens extra aan spanning door het wisselende vertelperspectief. Goede sfeer- en milieu- en karaktertekening. Meeslepende lectuur. Paarse omslag met gouden en witte belettering en een afbeelding van een gezicht omgeven door een korenveld. Normale druk.
