De Planten komen iedere dag dichterbij, Kleiner en kleiner wordt het groepje mensen dat stand weet te houden. Kleiner en kleiner wordt hun akker. De Planten groeien welig genoeg en hun sap is voedzaam en onuitputtelijk. Hoog rijzen hun vreemde stengels over de kleine nederzetting. Het lieflijke beeld uit het begin van dit verhaal krijgt allengs een dreigende tint. Geruchten over zinloze verbrandingen verspreiden zich. Mensen en dieren worden verzengd aangetroffen; de daders zijn onbekend. Een aartsvaderlijke boer vlucht met zijn gemeenschap weg van de verschroeiingsdood, naar een beschermende grot. Vandaar dringen zij door in de onderwereld van de plantenwortels, en belanden in een duister doolhof waarin zij jammerlijk dreigen om te komen. Maar de hel verkeert in een luilekkerland. Het kleverig webwerk, die witte draden, het is een overvloed van zoete suikerspin. De mens lijkt opnieuw overwinnaar. Maar waar komen die Planten vandaan? En die branden?

Deze spitsvondige geschiedenis is een schitterend voorbeeld van moderne, levendige science fiction. Het verhaal speelt kort nadat de materiezender is uitgevonden. Met dit nuttige apparaat kan men alles en iedereen in geen tijd van de ene plek naar de andere overzenden, geeft niet waarheen, als er maar een ontvanger staat. Transport per radio, als het ware. Natuurlijk is zo'n materiezender geweldig handig. Maar hij is nog erg nieuw... misschien zijn er wel bijverschijnselen. Wie zal het zeggen? In ieder geval niet de mensen die er van te lijden hebben! Zij kunnen namelijk helemaal niets meer zeggen. In hun schimmenrijk zijn ze onzichtbaar, onhoorbaar, ontastbaar - totaal niet waarneembaar voor de echte wereld. Iedere transmissie van de zender produceert een echo, een schim:een spookachtig duplicaat splitst zich af, van alles wat verzonden wordt. Zo raakt het schimmenrijk steeds voller... Tot overmaat van ramp doet de schim van Nathan Hansard de verlammende ontdekking dat de Aarde vanaf Mars met totale vernietiging wordt bedreigd. Als spook zal het hem niet meevallen het onheil te stuiten. Werkelijk een daverend essef-avontuur!

Lynn Voedisch is a fiction writer and journalist with many years experience working for newspapers and magazines, such as the Chicago Sun-Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, Dance magazine and many other publications. Currently, she works freelance for Technorati.com, an online news service. Her previously published novel is Excited Light. Lynn is a member of the board of directors of the Society of Midland Authors. She lives three blocks from the Chicago border with her husband and two cats. Her son, a law school graduate, is studying to pass the bar exam. So, Lynn looks forward to having a lawyer in the family. Her hobbies are tennis and tai chi.
