PLAY ON SHAPES FOR A MOD LOOK: In this case, a 3-D triangular cake is adorned with a 2-D triangle banner motif. Cake pans are made in just about every shape and size, or, to create unusual cake shapes at home without special pans, trace the shape desired on parchment paper, place the parchment on top of the baked cakes, and trim carefully. If you’re making a shape with straight edges, like these triangles, it is better to start with a square cake.
This cake is covered in white fondant so the edges appear extra crisp, allowing the even edges of the pattern to really pop. The pattern is made by cutting out pieces of fondant using a triangle cutter. You can apply them wet or dry. I applied them dry using royal icing as glue; if applying them while wet, use a mixture of equal parts water and corn syrup to adhere. Apply the triangles in straight rows around the cake, skipping one at random and two underneath it to create a larger triangle outline in the fondant. While the color scheme is mostly pale pinks with hints of mustard yellow and orange, for an unexpected twist, on one side the brighter orange triangles are the dominant color.
