* Another wonderful illustration of pattern-matching and innovating on what you know also comes from the cycling world. Have you ever wondered why the PowerBar has that chewy, sticky, almost rubbery texture, and why its texture is so different from other bars on the market? The story goes that the inventors of the PowerBar found it quite annoying to have to figure out what to do with the granola bars that they would bring along on bike rides. They had to open the wrapper, and then they would take a bite, only to have to figure out what to do with the rest of the granola bar if they wanted to save it for later. So they went into their kitchen and developed the first formulation for the PowerBar. With that thick and sticky texture, they could peel it open and take a bite, then wrap it around their handlebars and bike some more. When they got hungry again, they could peel it off their handlebars and take another bite, then wrap the rest around the handlebars again. Kind of disgusting, but also superbly innovative.
