CHAPITRE LXII

De la ville de Cingingui, et du massacre de ses habitants.

Après être sorti de la ville de Cingianfu, à trois journées, on vient à la ville de Cingingui (Tchang-tchéou), et l’on trouve sur la route beaucoup de villes et de villages, où il se fait un grand trafic de toutes sortes de marchandises, et où les habitants s’adonnent à toutes sortes d’arts. La ville de Cingingui est grande et riche, et abondante en tout ce qui est nécessaire à la vie. Lorsque Baiam, général des Tartares, assiégeait la province de Mangi, il envoya de certains chrétiens que l’on appelait Alains(130) contre cette ville, qui l’assiégèrent si vivement que les habitants furent obligés de se rendre. Étant entrés dans la ville, ils ne firent mal à personne, parce que tout le monde se soumit de bon cœur au Grand Khan. Comme ils trouvèrent en cette ville de fort bon vin et en quantité, ils burent si copieusement qu’ils s’enivrèrent, et, accablés de sommeil, ils ne songèrent point à poser des gardes pendant la nuit. Ce qu’ayant remarqué les habitants, qui les avaient reçus d’abord de bonne volonté, ils se jetèrent sur eux pendant qu’ils dormaient et les tuèrent tous sans en excepter un seul. Baiam, ayant appris cette nouvelle, envoya contre la ville une autre armée, qui, s’emparant bientôt de ses défenses, mit à mort sans miséricorde tous les habitants, pour venger les victimes.
