LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

LOVING CAPE TOWN'S COFFEE SCENE

Cape Town’s booming artisan coffee scene is documented in the blog I Love Coffee (www.ilovecoffee.co.za), compiled by Cindy Taylor and two colleagues. She shared with us some of her favourite places to sample the best roasted beans:

'I did my first interview for the blog at Deluxe Coffeeworks; the Kiwi owner Judd now has his roastery in the Yard where there's always something crazy going on – in a good way. In contrast, having a coffee at Tribe Woodstock is as comfortable as being at home; they have also have Tribe 112 in town.

I work in Woodstock so if I want a really good cup I go to Rosetta Roastery, who only do single origin coffee; they roast very specifically to make their coffees distinct. It's a similar approach as that at Espressolab Microroasters but Rosetta are less the purists – if you want to put sugar in your coffee that's fine by them!

Truth on Buitenkant has an amazing vibe with loud music and stunning interior design – it's more than just a coffee shop; and I support Bean There for promoting fair-trade policies, being personally involved with the farmers and providing information on where their coffee comes from.'

6Bo-Kaap & De Waterkant

Crew BarGAY, CLUB

( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.crewbar.co.za; 30 Napier St, De Waterkant; from 10pm Fri & Sat cover R20; icon-hoursgifh7pm-2am Sun-Thu, to 3.30pm Fri & Sat; icon-busgifgAlfred)

The best place for gays and the gay friendly to dance the night away – it helps that there are hunky bar dancers dressed only in skimpy shorts and glitter. Downstairs it’s hands in the air to the latest pop and dance anthems, while upstairs (usually only open weekends) the beats are harder and more eclectic.

Amsterdam Action Bar & BackstageGAY

( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.amsterdambar.co.za; 10-12 Cobern St, De Waterkant; icon-hoursgifh5pm-late; icon-busgifgAlfred)

The action is mainly on the upper level where dark rooms and cubicles provide a venue for punters to dabble in whatever or whomever they fancy. At ground level, the streetside balcony is a popular spot to smoke and watch the comings and goings.

There’s a pool table in the nonsmoking area, a small boutique for a fashion makeover (or sex toy), and in the connected Backstage bar, a live midnight shower show by the twinky barman.
