Valor in the Ashes (9)
THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE
Dan, ashen-faced, looked at Ben. “I thought I had seen it all, General. I guess I have …
now.”
Ben had sent Scouts forward, up the dark underground corridor, to see what lay around the next bend.
Dan waved a few of the Scouts forward and pointed to naked bodies on meat hooks. “Take them topside and bury them properly,” Ben said.
Ben walked out of the corridor, into the tunnel, crawled out of the hole and up to ground level, stepping out into the cold night air. He had uncovered the plans of the Night P. Now what? He would not send his people into a death trap, but he knew one thing for certain: the areas that had been cleared would have to be checked again. Every damn building and basement!
“What are we going to do, Ben?” Cecil asked.
“I’m going to push on down to the bridge, secure it, and make damn sure it stays open,” Ben said.
“If we’re going to be trapped in the Big Apple, I want us to be well-supplied.
Block every street, every avenue, every alley, every hole. And look for the sons of bitches to hit you from Brooklyn; they’ll be coming across at night, in boats. It’s desperation time, people.”
Ben broke off.
Cecil glanced over at Ike, sighed. “First we’re soldiers,” he said. “Now we’re combat engineers and tunnel rats.”
Ben and his troops were facing their greatest challenge.
If the gods of fate and chance and war did not smile upon them, the invasion of New York would destroy the Rebel army. The Night People would slowly spread and finally devour the nation-literally.
The hideousness had to be stopped … NOW.
