BIZANCIO Y LOS PERSAS

El fin del gobierno de Justiniano marcó la conclusión del ciclo expansivo de Bizancio. En este capítulo Gibbon establece, desde una perspectiva geopolítica, los límites de esa expansión y la aparición en el escenario de los reinos persas, sus enemigos. En su visión, original y de suma actualidad, también la vida política de Occidente resultó condicionada por la declinación bizantina y el ascenso persa. La producción historiográfica más reciente ha considerado la evolución del Occidente cristiano en relación con el Oriente, precisamente desde el punto de vista de su contacto con otras culturas, a través de invasiones o por otros caminos.
Por otro lado, principalmente en la producción historiográfica referida a los desarrollos nacionales, la historia del Imperio de Bizancio ha sido considerada en relación con su aporte al derecho, a la dinámica económica del área mediterránea, que es decisiva hasta el siglo XV, y por sobre su incidencia en la conformación de las distintas iglesias cristianas (véase «Cristianismo oriental», p. 289).
