Una vez concluida la historia del Imperio Romano de Occidente con las invasiones germanas, Gibbon decidió continuar su obra colocando el eje en el Imperio Romano de Oriente. Esta elección le permitió considerar en paralelo el desarrollo político y social en Oriente y Occidente, y realizar un contrapunto entre las costumbres romanas en Bizancio y los reinos romano-germánicos. El eje es el cristianismo, su relación con el Islam y la forma que adopta en Oriente. La historiografía reciente ha recuperado la relación entre la consolidación del feudalismo y del cristianismo como dos procesos interrelacionados. Mientras Gibbon se centra en los rasgos decadentistas de la política en Oriente, el pan y circo, la historiografía se ha interesado especialmente en Justiniano, su intento de conquista pero, sobre todo, en las leyes elaboradas y recopiladas durante su gobierno.
