THE CHALLENGE

There are many ways to isolate a given subject. While the simplest is using a wide-open aperture for a very shallow depth of field, you may find that this technique sometimes leads to uneven lighting and/or uneven tones in the background. These tones can steal attention away from, rather than call attention to, your subject. One solution is to transform the background into a velvety black backdrop.
