Late one afternoon in downtown
Chicago, my students and I came upon a battered and bruised
fire-hose box. With my camera and lens mounted on tripod, and with
the aid of my SB-900 flash, I set up this “mountainous landscape”
of red. Note the “horizon line” placement near the bottom third, as
well as the fact that there are three distinct sections of red in
this composition. Some might argue that the mountain is
dead-centered, and I would agree. But this “mountain” is not a
single, static line; rather, it comprises three lines that form a
triangle whose very design suggests movement: “up” one side and
“down” the other. This suggested movement avoids any static feeling
normally associated with centering an object.
