The “Bean” sculpture in Millennium
Park has quickly become one of Chicago’s most popular sculptures. I
have photographed the Bean in all sorts of light, in different
seasons, and at different times of day, and was quickly reaching
the point where, short of seeing the perfect rainbow arching over
the Bean, I would probably have little reason to photograph it
again. That was until I hit on the idea of a woman in red high
heels. A few quick phone calls and I had my model, complete with
the requested red heels, for something a bit more memorable than
the “standard” Bean shot. This image, taken with a handheld camera,
is again about line, along with a dash of color, but more than
either of those it is the point of view and use of foreground
interest that make the image possible, thanks to a wide-angle lens
and a small aperture.
