While shooting an old fort in Sydney,
Australia, I spotted one of my students through a small opening in
the fort’s stone wall. I quickly placed the camera to my eye, and
once I had what I felt was a nice composition, I hollered out her
name. Just as she turned around, I fired the camera. Surrounded by
the massive rock, this lone student is in marked contrast to the
surrounding shapes and textures. Even though she is so small in the
overall frame, she looms largest of all in terms of importance.
This is in part because of the contrast between her and the
surroundings but also because of the way she is framed.
