Galactic Dreams

<h3>From Publishers Weekly</h3><p>Few commercial writers are more deserving of their popularity than Harrison ( The Hammer and the Cross ), a fine writer who occasionally reaches brilliant heights. His latest collection boasts moments that rank high, but the overall level is middling. The colloquial "histories" of "Famous First Words" are never less than quaint and at times hilarious, while "At last, the True Story of Frankenstein" stands above most of the myriad variations on Mary Shelley's original. Even in the several pieces (such as "The Pad") that seem to have outlived their day, Harrison's wit is an adequate recommendation. But several tales ("If"; "Mute Million") rely too heavily on their trick-of-the-tail endings, and the lone new story ("Bill, the Galactic Hero's Happy Holidays") is one of the least worthy entries. Diverting if not impressive, this collection is still a pleasant read. <br />Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. </p><h3>From Library Journal</h3><p>A dozen stories, including an adventure never before published featuring the galactic hero Bill, demonstrate the versatile talents of this prolific sf veteran author (Stainless Steel Visions, Tor Bks., 1993).<br />Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. </p><

Gaslight Grimoire: Fantastic Tales of Sherlock Holmes

<h3>From Publishers Weekly</h3><p>In his foreword, David Stuart Davies asserts that the authors of these 11 stories pitting Holmes against the supernatural are very well-versed in the world of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Unfortunately, this authority fails to come through. The eloquence of the one standout, Barbara Roden's The Things That Shall Come Upon Them, only emphasizes what the others lack. Roden effortlessly involves Holmes in a mystery derived from M.R. James's classic tale of terror, Casting the Runes, featuring psychic sleuth Flaxman Low. By contrast, Martin Powell's Sherlock Holmes in the Lost World sees Holmes battling ape-men and dinosaurs without any display of his remarkable intellect, and M.J. Elliott's The Finishing Stroke pays so much homage as to neglect originality. As a whole, this mixed bag fails to differentiate itself from other similar anthologies. <em>(Nov.)</em> <br />Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. </p><h3>From Booklist</h3><p>This one seems like a natural. It’s well known that Sherlock Holmes’ creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, was deeply interested in the paranormal, a subject bursting with possibilities for the kind of mystery that only Holmes could solve—except that Conan Doyle had firmly established Holmes as investigating only real-world cases with real-world, logical solutions. This anthology, featuring such writers as Barbara Hambly, Chris Roberson, and Kim Newman, purports to present the kinds of Holmes stories Conan Doyle might have written if he had allowed Holmes to become involved with the otherworldly. The stories are a mixed lot, with characters ranging from Peter Pan to a 1940s Los Angeles private eye to old friends like Professor Moriarty and Inspector Lestrade, but unfortunately some of them read not like a story Conan Doyle might have written but like fan fiction—long on imagination but short on execution. Others, however, are a lot of fun, well written and entertaining. Holmes devotees may be a bit disappointed, but fans of fantastic fiction should be happy to see the famous detective stepping into their world. --David Pitt </p><

Goodbye Mr. Chips

<div><h3>Review</h3><p><em>"A gem for all time"</em> —The Observer</p><h3>Product Description</h3><p>Full of enthusiasm, young English schoolmaster  Mr. Chipping came to teach at Brookfield in 1870.  It was a time when dignity and a generosity of  spirit still existed, and the dedicated new  schoolmaster expressed these beliefs to his rowdy students.  Nicknamed Mr. Chips, this gentle and caring man  helped shape the lives of generation after  generation of boys. He became a legend at Brookfield, as  enduring as the institution itself. And sad but  grateful faces told the story when the time came for  the students at Brookfield to bid their final  goodbye to Mr. Chips.<br></p><p>There is not  another book, with the possible exception of  Dickens's <em>A Christmas Carol</em>, that has  quite the same hold on readers' affections. James  Hilton wrote <em>Goodbye, Mr. Chips</em> in loving memory  of his schoolmaster father and in tribute to his  profession. Over the years it has won an enduring  place in world literature and made untold millions  of people smile--with a catch in the throat. </p></div><

Shannon Hale

The Goose Girl

A New York Public Library "100 Titles for Reading and Sharing"A Texas Lone Star Reading List BookA Josette Frank Award WinnerA Utah State Book Award WinnerA Utah Speculative Fiction Award Winner Shannon Hale started writing books at age ten and has never stopped, earning an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana sixteen years later, and publishing The Goose Girl, her first book, not long after that. A sometime actress, instructional designer and missionary, she now makes her home in Salt Lake City, Utah with her super-human husband and their pet, a small, plastic pig. On her way to marry a prince she has never met, Princess Anidori is betrayed by her guards and her lady-in-waiting and must become a goose girl to survive until she can reveal her true identity and reclaim the crown that is rightfully hers. "In layer upon layer of detail a beautiful coming-of-age story emerges, a tale about learning to rescue yourself rather than falling accidently into happily-ever-after."—The New York Times Book Review "She can whisper to horses and communicate with birds, but the crown princess Ani has a difficult time finding her place in the royal family and measuring up to her imperial mother. When she is shipped off to a neighboring kingdom as a bride, her scheming entourage mounts a bloody mutiny to replace her with a jealous lady-in-waiting, Selia, and to allow an inner circle of guards more power in the new land. Barely escaping with her life, Ani disguises herself as a goose girl and wanders on the royal estate. Does she have the pluck to reclaim her rightful place? Get ready for a fine adventure tale full of danger, suspense, surprising twists, and a satisfying conclusion. The engaging plot can certainly carry the tale, but Hale's likable, introspective heroine makes this also a book about courage and justice in the face of overwhelming odds. The richly rendered, medieval folkloric setting adds to the charm."—Booklist "A magical retelling of the Grimms's fairy tale of the princess who became a goose girl before she could become queen. Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, Crown Princess of Kildenree, is born with the ability to speak to animals, a gift that is nurtured by her aunt. When the king dies, the queen announces that Ani's younger brother, not the crown princess, will succeed her on the throne. Unbeknownst to anyone, the queen has promised Ani in marriage to the prince of neighboring Bayern. The devastated teen is sent with a retinue over the mountains to Bayem and is betrayed by Selia, her lady-in-waiting, and most of her guards during the journey. Ani escapes, takes the name 'Isi,' disguises her distinctive blonde hair, and becomes a tender of geese to survive until she can reveal her true identity and reclaim her crown from the imposter, Selia. Ani meets and falls in love with Geric, who is, conveniently, the prince she is to marry. She is able to convince him and the king of her identity, marry, become queen, and stop a war between the kingdoms. This retelling retains many similarities to the original tale, including the gruesome punishment for treason. Hale's retelling is a wonderfully rich one, full of eloquent description and lovely imagery, and with a complex plot, a large cast of characters, and a strong female protagonist. Fans of high fantasy will be delighted with this novel, the first in a planned trilogy, and impatiently await those to follow."—School Library Journal (starred review)<

The Grand Design

When and how did the universe begin? Why are we here? What is the nature of reality? Is the apparent 'grand design' of our universe evidence for a benevolent creator who set things in motion? Or does science offer another explanation? In The Grand Design, the most recent scientific thinking about the mysteries of the universe is presented in language marked by both brilliance and simplicity. The Grand Design explains the latest thoughts about model-dependent realism (the idea that there is no one version of reality), and about the multiverse concept of reality in which there are many universes. There are new ideas about the top-down theory of cosmology (the idea that there is no one history of the universe, but that every possible history exists). It concludes with a riveting assessment of m-theory, and discusses whether it is the unified theory Einstein spent a lifetime searching for. This is the first major work in nearly a decade by one of the world's greatest thinkers. A succinct, startling and lavishly illustrated guide to discoveries that are altering our understanding and threatening some of our most cherished belief systems, The Grand Design is a book that will inform - and provoke - like no other.<

The Great Leader

<p>Literary legend Jim Harrison gives us a brilliant new work that finds him writing at the height of his powers, and in fresh and audacious new directions. The Great Leader is the story of Detective Sunderson, a northern Michigan police detective who has recently retired and has one case he can't quite shake &#8212; the investigation of a cult leader whom he eventually pursues to Arizona and further afield. Harrison gives readers a unique take on the culture of "Yoopers" (what folks from the rest of Michigan and the Midwest call people from the Upper Peninsula) and cops, in a novel that is wonderfully clever, powerful, and slyly redemptive.<

Greg Mandel #01 - Mindstar Rising

<div><h3>From Publishers Weekly</h3><p>Critically acclaimed in his native England for four novels, all SF, Hamilton makes his stateside debut with the novel that launched his writing career and that begins his Greg Mandel trilogy. Set in a 21st-century England recovering from massive global warming, the story reads like a collaboration between William Gibson and Ian Fleming. Freelance operative Mandel is a veteran of the Mindstar Battalion, whose men received telepathic powers via implanted glands. Now he is the ally of the teenage heiress of a high-tech industrial empire, Julia Evans, in a desperate battle against Kendric di Girolamo, a ruthless and obsessed financier, and Leopold Armstrong, former leftist dictator of England, who is trying to regain power. Plenty of action, exotic hardware (particularly computers), urban grunge, double handfuls of eccentric, decadent or criminal characters and enough willing women to raise the eyebrows of the politically correct hallmark this fast-moving tale. SF fans may particularly enjoy, as a change of pace, experiencing a vision of the future that coheres but that takes its clues from British, rather than American, society and history. <br>Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. </p><h3>From Library Journal</h3><p>Published in England in 1993, this first book in the Greg Mandel trilogy introduces us to an England suffering from the environmental and political effects of global warming, an energy crisis, and a credit crash.
